Things Learned From…
Personal trainer Ben Bruno’s Common Sense Diet principles
— Eat well most (~80%) of the time. Save junk food splurges for the stuff you really love
— Stop eating before you’re stuffed
— Make sure to get enough protein for your body goals
— Avoid foods that make YOU feel/perform poorly (Everyone is different in this regard)
— Drink plenty of water/fluids, but limit alcohol
— Eat your veggies — the more the better
— Find a meal frequency that works for your schedule
— Don’t be that person who takes your diet so seriously that you miss out on life experiences
I’d write a book about it, but nobody would buy it because everyone seems to want more complicated diets that say don’t eat breakfast, don’t eat carbs, don’t eat whatever else. So alas, I’ll stick to training.
It’s true, the nutrition world can be confusing because there’s so much conflicting information — even amongst experts. As such, it’s hard to know who/what to believe.
Truthfully, I’m not nearly as passionate about nutrition as I am about training so I don’t spend much/any time reading nutrition research, but here’s what I do:
If you apply common sense to what you read/hear, it will get rid of a lot of the fad diets, bogus claims, and more extreme ways of eating that clearly aren’t healthy, logical, or most importantly, sustainable. I’m not a fan of severe caloric restriction or diets that eliminate entire food groups. Quick fixes rarely last.
If I’m faced with conflicting ideas from two reputable sources, I just side with the information that supports the foods that I enjoy the most.
Thanks for reading! Hope you have an amazing day.
